An 18-year-old girl who got pregnant after being raped in her hometown province fled to Bangkok, where she later gave birth to a child in her apartment. She tried to abandon her newborn, but police were notified and placed them in foster care.

BANGKOK – August 27, 2012 [PDN]: Residents reported to the police of Takham police station, Bangkok, that they found an abandoned newborn baby outside an apartment.

Police rushed to inspect at scene at the apartment building at Soi Bangbarn-Bangkhuntien 11, Amphur Bangkhuntien.

Outside the rental apartment, police found a female infant less than 20 hours old. Her umbilical cord had been cut, and there were bloodstains on her body and on the floor.

The baby appeared healthy, but its body was starting to turn green, so police rushed her to Bangpakok 8 hospital.

After investigating, police located the baby’s mother, “Ms. Jane” (alias,) age 18, and questioned her. She initially denied being the baby’s mother, so the police brought her to investigate at Takham police station.

Ms. Jane then confessed that the female baby was her daughter. She had given birth by herself in the rental room, but she told police she is not ready to take care of the baby.

Ms. Jane said that during the New Year’s festival in her hometown in Sukhothai province, she was on her way back home, but was raped by a man in the forest. She felt afraid and embarrassed after her rape, and didn’t dare to notify the police or tell her parents what happened.

When she discovered she was pregnant, she moved away to live in Bangkok. She found a job and rented the room to stay alone because she didn’t want her family to know that she was pregnant.

Then, on the previous night, she was lying down and resting in her room, when she felt extreme pains in her belly. But she didn’t know anyone who could help her, so she gave birth by herself, using a razor to cut the umbilical cord.

In the morning, she put her baby outside in front of the room, but someone later notified the police. Initially, the police believed that Ms. Jane was telling the truth about being raped and getting pregnant.

Because Ms. Jane indicated she was not ready to feed the baby, police contacted the Prachabordee Center and asked to send the teenage mother and baby to the foster home.
