22 Taiwanese get 3-year jail term each in call centre scam

BANGKOK, Aug 27 - Thailand's Criminal Court on Monday sentenced 22 Taiwanese to 3 year jail terms in a call centre scam, but their sentences were commuted to one year and six months after they confessed to the crime.

The Criminal Court read the verdict on Shin Pao-Sheng, a Tawanese and 21 accomplices -- 12 men and nine women – for criminal association.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on March 28 arrested Shin Pao-Sheng and his accomplices who rented houses at the Seri housing estate in Bangkok's Soi Lat Phrao 101 and the Mueang Thong 3 housing estate in Nonthaburi as offices.

They operated 'come-on' schemes which lured victims to transfer money to bank accounts operated by gang members.

The court concluded that the defendants committed offences in violation of Thai law and used Thailand as their base to commit their crimes.

Their behaviours were also considered social danger so that the court sentenced them to 3-year imprisonment each.

Their sentences however were halved to a year and a half each after they confessed the crime. (MCOT online news)
