Ulcer from eating Thai food?

Hey fellas,

I've been in the bush now for over a month. Currently on Koh Samui.

As of yesterday I've started having sharp pains in my central abdomin that come and go.

They last for about 4 seconds and then go away for about 15 to 20 minutes.

I'm thinking ulcer because last time I returned back to Japan after my December pattaya trip I went to the hospital thinking I had a hernia. The doctor gave me some meds and told me it was a mild ulcer. In a day, it was gone.

So, I'm thinking I can ask a pharmacy here for some medicine for an ulcer, but the pharmacists don't seem as knowledgable as the ones in pattaya.

So, my fellow mongerers with medical backgrounds, what's a guy to do.

And for the haters who say " why post about medical advice on a mongering forum?" just keep to yourselves and stay on the porch.

Ive gotten better advice on this forum than anywhere else.

Cheers for any and all info, brothers!!!

Maybe lining in stomach is stripped ,have you tried milky products? ie.. Actimel, creamed rice, milkshakes and relax on foods with chillies as western diets vary different to asian diets ,Also coconut milk which is widely available should help and mashed potatos starch in them should seal tummy back up.Also if you could get your hands on Milk of Magnesia (Brand philips in Thailand should help) Best of luck on getting better....and most of all relax on the

Milk can make your ulcer worse. Milk provides brief relief of ulcer pain because it coats the stomach lining. But milk can also stimulate your stomach to produce more acid and digestive juices, which can aggravate ulcers.

Don't smoke.

Avoid alcohol.

Don't overuse aspirin.

try this link.

Sounds like what I got (that temp sharp pain). Patts Memorial diagnosed an ulcer which cleared pretty quickly with meds. For a week I couldn't eat or drink anything except sips of water. It's horrible being in Patts sober, especially when your mate's pissed. I lay off the spicey stuff now, lesson learnt. Get well soon!

My Pattaya budget is perfectly adequate as long as I don't spend any of it

Sounds like reflux, excess stomach acid is produced and burns the lower part of your oesophagus. Feels like someone is putting a hot knife through the centre of your chest.

I have been taking Losec (Omeprazole) for years, and it works brilliantly. It stops the excess acid. All the other stuff just masks the acid and does not fix the problem.

Hot food does not cause ulcers, its bacterial.

Try the losec see if it helps, should make a difference within hours.

Hey LRanger,

I got my hands on some Omeprazole (moprix). A bit expensive at 450 baht a box.

Directions indicate once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.

What's your style on this one? It doesn't mention anything about alcohol either.

Cheers!

Antacil tablets, 6 Baht for 10 for the quick fix of the pain if it's not ulcers, but excess stomach acid. Could cause a bit of diarrhea if you eat many. Maybe have yourself checked for a Heliobacter infection, can be cured. That bug is the leading cause of ulcers, and heartburns.

Cheers fellas,

I'm on my second day of Omeprazole. Stomach pains have lessened and when taken along with imodium I actually feel pretty normal.

Keep y'all posted.

Thanks again

I'm not a doctor, but I've been told the same thing. Hot food does not cause ulcers, it's bacterial. Makes sense to me, otherwise every Thai would have ulcers.

Like most Thais who eat hot food you most likely have gas reflux, if not addressed this can cause big problems down the road even cancer. You can do a self test since reflux main cause is hot and spicy food, alcohol, caffaine in coffee and many soft drinks like coke. Stuffing yourself with food eating large portion causes problems, eat smaller portions, don't lay flat on your back after eating large portions to ease the pain lay on your side. Not everyone is sensitive to all the items I listed for me it was coffee after a large cup I felt if I was going to have a stroke, at time it was a soft drink. At the height of reflux once ingested of one of these items the problem should appear. The best way is to avoid the items that triggers the problem and let it heal.. I took Prelosec for two years straight and laid off coffee and it went away today last time I checked there is a new product called NEXUM, you can get the real things not copy or generic for 8 pills for 600 baht? I have recommended it to several people they took it straight for a week and laid off the trigger items and the problem went away.

Omeprazole is really for heartburn. Can't see it would be effective for ulcers, but it seems to be working for you so stick with and avoid too much spicy stuff.

Most stomach ulcer are caused by heliobacter pylori:

Barry James Marshall, AC, FRS, FAA (born 30 September 1951) is an Australian physician, Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine, and Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Western Australia. Marshall and Robin Warren showed that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the cause of most peptic ulcers, reversing decades of medical doctrine holding that ulcers were caused by stress, spicy foods, and too much acid. This discovery has allowed for a breakthrough in understanding a causative link between Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach cancer.

I should post this over on the Aussie Inventions thread - really more a discovery than an invention though.

Its not widely publicized, but L-Glutamine is fantastic at repairing ulcers, and to get your intestines working good. You should be able to purchase it at most health food stores.

You have really got mostly good advice here 90%. My only concern is if it could be something more serious, beginning of a billiary/ Gallbladder obstruction or inflammation. Or worse Pancreatitis. If the Losec seems to be working just continue it for now

Be careful and good luck.
