Police arrested 50 ladyboys and prostitutes in a late-night sweep along Beach Road. The arrests were meant to serve as a warning to the sex workers not to commit crimes against tourists. Each sex worker was fined 100 baht and released.

PATTAYA – August 23, 2012 [PDN]: At 12:30 a.m., a police sweep of sex workers in the Beach Road area was announced by Pattaya police from the Muang Pattaya Chonburi station.

Police officers and volunteer police had arrested more than 50 ladyboys and prostitutes. Nearly all of them had previous arrest records. After arresting them, police asked each one for updated information to log in their files.

Each person was charged with soliciting prostitution in a public area and fined 100 baht. They were given a warning before being released not to commit any crimes against tourists.

Police said these periodic arrests are a preventive measure meant to prevent crimes against tourists, and to create a good image of Pattaya for tourists who visit Pattaya Beach at night.

Not a bad thing I think!

I'm sure they will be able to earn 100 Bht easily enough, also it might help cut some of the drugings.

I was ready to type 'leave the poor girls alone' but having read it I think it's good to put that message out to them.

What message? I've never felt in the least bit threatened by the girls - or, at least on BR, the LBs either. How does this prevent any crime? How does this prevent anyone drugging anyone? Pure harrassment. As far as I see it is the tourists (certain tourists) who harass them not the other way around.

Well, I feel threatened by the sex crazed stares of the Beach Rd. ladies. I'm always afraid of being sexually assaulted. The 100 baht fine is warning to these ladies not to sexually assault me.

But that's the best bit (if they are women of course)

Heinous crimes. Baht roundup. Council rates for beach road introduced. Situation comprehensively sorted.

I think that they want to clean up the area a little because

of the tourists. I don't think this is a bad idea at least the

girls/ladyboys know they are being looked at.

Well the message was written in the article.

It will help them see that the police can do this if they don't behave theirselves, so thus preventing some crime.

This will prevent some drugging as if the girls think they may get taken to the police station at random, then they won't be carrying the drugs to do it.

Always good to put a post up that's pro-police and saying well done, to then have it shot down by someone who only ever thinks they do wrong.

It may well of been a baht grabbing thing? but what they do is illegal! and it's not like the gov get any tax off of there earnings is it!

It is a mongering forum! but that doesn't say that we all have no morals, they are trying to stamp out the crime aspect of it, so what's wrong with that??

For the most part, if you leave 'em alone (the beach road whores) they'll leave you alone. Make eye contact with any of them and you'll get their interest though.

I've been absolutely off my face drunk and probably quite vulnerable walking along beach road alone and have felt perfectly safe. I'm more worried about walking down a city street in Sydney or Melbourne after dark than I am beach road.

Yeah, round up the usual suspects. A bit of extortion of the innocent is a great way to keep the plebs in order.

Drugged. Pfft. Who gets drugged? Iranians and Indians who are always found two and three in a room having tried to get a gangbang for 500 baht. Serves them right. Mugs.

(Cue response: "ooo ooo they are not innocent. ooo ooo prostitution is a crime!!!!")

LOL

I know it is mainly(or at least seems) Indians that get druged, but it does happen to the odd poor sole that just wanted to hire her.

I was never saying that prostitution should be illegal(utter madness to make it so in my opinion!) but it is a crime under Thai law, and if I was to break the law over there and get off with 100Bht fine I would be over the moon! I think if they finned them a big amount I would of been on the side of it was a money making thing, but it just seems like they are trying to send a little message this time?

Bill

P.S

I have to say your last line did make me laugh! we may not agree on some things, but I really did find that amusing!

With my insomnia, I walk around town at almost any hour of the day/night (as I did in the States) and a few years ago when they installed the extra lighting on Beach Road, it's one of the safer places to walk in town once you cross the street :)

I know we all have our biases and prejudices from our thought processes or past experiences, but the majority of these ladies on Beach Road are working to earn their money, not from criminal activities. The few that make newspaper headlines or forum warnings also exist elsewhere, even in our USA banks or corp/gov offices. I like to believe in "due process" and random sweeps and automatic fines are far from it.

JMHO.

What crimes? Like prostitution you mean?

Anyone who wants to stamp their morals on others raises alarm bells with me. As long as there is no coercion & no kids involved, whatever adults want to do with each other or to themselves is fine by me.
