ANG THONG, July 1 - Land subsidence in the central province of Ang Thong caused damages to nine houses while the cause of the sinkholes remains unknown.

Chatchai Yensuang, Assistant district officer on Sunday inspected the area in the provincial seat where a road and housing foundations along the road cracked and subsided. Some houses subsided to almost one metres below the road surface.

Shuan Sriwattanatham, owner of a damaged house, said she noticed cracks in her home one months ago when the municipality workers were repairing the road and her house started to subside quickly in the past week. It is initially believed that land subsidence may be related to filling up the road surface to make it higher.

The officials cannot yet finalise the cause while the assistant district officer said it may also be linked to last year’s devastating flood. Specialists will work to find out the true cause, while authorities will help local residents affected by the incident.  (MCOT online news)
