PATTANI, June 29 - Two defence volunteers were gunned down in Saiburi district of this southern border province Friday morning, local police said.

The victims were identified as Wiwat In-iad, 42, and Kritsana Thepsao, 34.

The violence took place as the pair were off-duty and heading home in a pick-up truck. They were attacked by an unknown number of gunmen in another vehicle who fired several shots from M16 assault rifles and an AK 47.

Following the attack, the gunmen got off their vehicle and shot the two volunteers again before making off with the victims' two .38 calibre pistols.
