Diarrhoea. How to avoid it.

Recommended Posts

I got diarrhea at the end of my trip and had a long flight back home. I picked up some tablets called diarine from the pharmacy but they didn't really help. I like to try Thai food so I didn't want to stop eating it but I had the runs for the whole 24 hr for my flights home. What do you guys take to fight diarrhea or stop it? The only thing I found that slowed it for me was drinking ginger ale. I couldn't even drink water. It cleared up the next day when I got home after I got back to my normal diet.

nick named "poo lock" should do the trick.

However, a doctors check up is you best bet.....do it.

Did I mention go to a doctor?

GO TO A DOCTOR.

Unfortunately imodium does not stop the bacteria in your intestines, it just dries it up temporarily, if it is a mild problem then it will go away but if it is severe it will simply start again once you take your last tablet.

I take a pro-biotic called Travelan which fixes it before it is broke (so to speak) and it seems to work on me.

On my way back from Thailand, once I nearly shit myself on a flight so I looked into this in detail LOL.

I am sure there is alternatives to Travelan but the theory is sound IMHO.

Many travelers swear by raspberry cordial as well.

Take two imodium before your flight or try those charcoal tablets. If you can't handle Thai food don't eat it unless you like sitting on the shitter all day.

Only take Imodium if you're going to travel. Otherwise just stay in your hotel and drink plenty of fluids and let it go its course. And if it's not passed within two-three days or you have high fever go to the doctor. Diarrhea is unavoidable, but you can lessen the risks by having good hand hygiene. Don't use the shitty towels they put out in some of the bathrooms in bars. They are bacteria fun ground. There's also the old trick to avoid anything that's not been fried or boiled. Raw foods should be avoided, salads and such. Sea-food is notorious for giving you some sort of shit (pun intended). But all in all, you will get it, and you have to plan for it.

Loperamide from Boots. This is basically immodium but in a tablet rather than capsule form and a lot less expensive. If you have a long journey ahead take 2 or if that does not stop it take another 2, repeat until it stops.

You may need to drink some muddy pond water to go again once you get home :)

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !

I have a friend who had the runs during a long trip to SE Asia. He kept taking Immodium until the runs stopped. It made him so sick he needed emergency surgery and almost died. As he explained it, when you have the runs it is the body's reaction to something bad in your digestive system. Your body is basically dispelling poisons from the body. If you jam up your system too much and back up all these poisions in your body it can lead to some serious repercussions. The good news for him is he dropped 40 pounds and ended up with what was probably his ideal body weight. But it took him several months to recover completely.

Man this is a 'shitty' thread 555555!!!

In all seriousness this is very informative. I have always been aware of the risks of getting sick/the runs when traveling to a 3rd world country.

I guess one of the best things to do is go prepared and don't be surprised if you happen to get sick.

When I traveled to Mexico last year I took Pepto Bismol tablets and chewed on at least 1 - 2 a day and I was fine. I also made sure I didn't drink any water that didn't come from a bottle and washed my hands frequently.

Heh.. I'd gotten sick both time I went to Pattaya, within a day after arriving, with lose stomach and fever. Worked itself after 2-3 days in bed, but that's a notable part of my vacation in the first place.. Think I will try to take some pills prior to leaving to prepare my stomach in hopes of that helping. Using imodium but stomach is still lose. Maybe Nycopro would work..

Dont want to stay away from the thai food. Dont mind staying away from the raw food, but then I usually know little about what I'm ordering :D.

Yes Immodium, you can get them in any pharmacy in Thailand, I always keep a few on me, take 2 every 4 hours, they cost about 80baht for 8 tablets

I always get the shits in Pattaya and take 2 immodium as soon as it starts and then another one every time after and afyer afew hours its always ok. On second last trip I worked out that it was always after I ate beef. So last time I stuck to chicken and pork and was much better.

Were a nappy it will save you. Having to run to the bog. every 5 minutes.

I get the shits bad. so i am all so looking for tips.

My Tilak had the shits one day so I gave her immodium

So instead of the shit coming our of her arse - it desided to re-appear as sick coming out of her gob.

She was not best pleased :)

Unfortunately imodium does not stop the bacteria in your intestines, it just dries it up temporarily.

That's not really what an anti-diarrheal does. It slows down the peristalsis in the bowels allowing absorption of the excess water into the body.

Codeine does the same (most narcotics do, some quite a lot). Codeine is actually better for this if you can get it without being compounded with Acetominophen.

The normal and safe procedure is:

  1. Take 2 Imodium and 1 each time you have the runs up to 8 in one day. This could mean 4 or 5 in an hour. Try the under the tongue fast dissolve ones though they cost a lot. Generic tablets can get shit out but are less money.
  2. Take 2 500 mg Ciprofloxacin right away
  3. Take one 500 mg every 12 hours for a total of 3 days
  4. Take them for all 3 days even though the diarrhea will have abated likely the first day
  5. Take probiotics if you can find them (bring some), to replenish the useful bacteria killed off by the Cipro.

If it continues after 48 hours, see a physician, if it is bloody don't wait, if it is like mucus don't wait (more likely to be a protozoal infection vs bacterial and will need a different medicine that varies by locale)

During all this dehydration poses a large risk so drink as much as reasonable and take electrolyte replacements.

Most pharmacies have these supplements (those in the tropics always do). Gatorade (and any other sports drink) is NOT a good supplement as it has too much hard to digest sugar. And not an ideal electrolyte mix. If that's all you have water it down 50/50. It will last longer anyway.

Real Club Soda (not Chang) like Canada dry is good if it says it has potassium and sodium salts listed on the can. Pedialyte is a brand of electrolyte replacement for children but it will work, just costs dearly.

I carry powdered salts with me obtained in North America. You need the sodium and potassium salts.

I don't agree that Diarrhea is unavoidable but if you do get it dont take Imodium or anything else, unless you're going to travel home.....

Just let it completely blast out over 12 hours, constantly drinking bottles of water throughout....
