If you're arriving late and can bare an extra 1.5 hours in a car, I'd go direct. My main reason is lack of traffic. Trying to get to BKK to Patttaya when there is a lot of traffic, a road accident etc... it's a real bitch.

I don't really find "bargains" for hotels really exist anymore. All the agoda, booking etc "50% sale" is all BS. I'm not quite sure why, and I've seen someone else bring this up, but I actually found it cheaper to keep book daily then to book for example a full 2 weeks. Kind of stupid? The only time I noticed prices significantly change was NYE. Hotels that are normally 1500 were asking 8x the price. No thanks. Most of the time I book a hotel a few days before arriving. In my experience, booking months out doesn't make much of a difference, but YMMV. I even booked like 3 days before Pattaya songkran... Hotels were basically the same price, except maybe limited availability. I stayed at amethyst before... But not sure what room you got and tbh I don't think I paid over 2k baht... However it was a few years ago.

On the topic of hotel, I personally think Ochardz is underated (they have 3 locations in the mongering area) industri, jayakarta and I think the other one is grand (or mansion?) I'm a man of trial and error and I've stayed at places ranging from 150k - 3M a night in indo. IDK what that is exactly, but like $10 USD - $220. the only real difference I notice from some hotels than obviously somewhat nicer rooms, is people might greet me a bit more, people hold the doors open etc.... but I don't need princess treatment. Orchardz seems to be the best value for me, depending on the room you're looking around the 450-550k. That being said, I'm not a hotel snob and I usually stay long periods. Central Jakarta is also not the best value for getting good hotel deals.... Alam sutera, which is a much nicer area, I was paying like 300k for a very nice, new, condo.... But obviously that's like an hour away from central Jakarta and not good if you focus on classic area.

If you're at a place like shang hotel with freelancers, I assume they are probably classy and dress nice (not like your Thai hoes) but they are very likely older and asking much more.
