SCUBA Diving in LOS?

Recommended Posts

Quick question for you fellas (or ladies) who have done some diving in Thailand...

I'll be in Patts for a week and figured I would head out to the Far Islands for some diving to kill some time...been a while since I got any dives in.

It's my understanding that the dives aren't great in Pattaya, but I don't know if this in reference to the Near Islands, Far Islands or just in general....if this is the opinion from well traveled/experienced divers or an across the board consensus.

I am entertaining extending my departure date from LOS beyond my week in Patts and heading down to Phuket for some good diving down there (I have read it's great). I am looking for some great dive spots that still have a great nightlife...I'm not interested in just diving if I extend.

Here are my questions...

1. Opinions of diving the Far Islands...good, bad or indifferent and why?

2. Diving in/around Phuket...I have never been in this area of Thailand...so what are the recommendations while keeping a nightlife in mind?

3. Any recommended dive shops to look at and plan trips with?

4. Anything I should know about specific to diving in Thailand?

5. Water temps...do you wear a half-suit and if so, how thick? I get cold pretty easily which makes some dives miserable unfortunately...but I have several suits at varying thickness 2mm, 3mm & 5mm....I figured I would bring the 2mm suit and be fine...good plan?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

  • 2 weeks later...

The near and far islands are ok 2 wrecks you can do aswell. If the time of year is right they do trips to Samesan, diving is much better there, a good wreck dive there also. All are day trips leave 0830/0900 back 1730 at the latest. The guys have lived and dived there for over 10 years.

The diving is poor in Pattaya.

The seas all around have been stripped bare by massive over-fishing.

On some dives all I saw was one type of fish and one type of sea urchin.

Some of the currents can also be quite strong and visibility is not great.

Most of the dives leave from a fishing port to the south of Pattaya.

it makes for a long day beacuse they tend to send a baht bus aroudn the hotels to pickup around 7am.

It goes all over town, then down to the fishing port.

The boat will stay out all day for two dives, then back and they drop you back of at the nearest dive shop or your hotel.

7am pickup and 4 to 6pm arrive back.

Phuket is much much better.

Lots more to see.

Bangla road is the place to go if you want some nightlife and diving.

The nightlife is pretty decent by most standards. 30+ bars, a handfull of clubs/gogos.

However its nothing compared to pattaya. Its also a bit touristy and more expensive.

Pattaya = best p4p/nightlife in the world but poor diving

Phuket(Bangla road) = Great diving, and a little bit of nightlife

if you dive in pattaya and party in Phuket then your not getting the most out your holiday :)

Bit dated, sorry, but 10 years ago did my OpenWater off Ko Tao. I was impressed. Day trips from there to a nearby protected park reportedly better, WhaleSharks, etc. Ko Tao felt like one giant dive shop - very small island with apparently 80 dive shops, 1000 dives a day. No nightlife compared to somewhere like Phuket. Ko Samui seemed like a nice balance.

Great feedback guys and much appreciated.

Based on the info you guys have shared, I'll probably go ahead and just skip diving the Near/Far Islands...enjoy Patt's nightlife...and save the diving for week two off Phuket.

I enjoy the wrecks here, Aquanauts are a good shop to go with, I do a lot of diving and dive in a 5/7 semi-dry, I get cold easily.
